01. What are the eligibility requirements for an apprenticeship?
To start an apprenticeship in England you must be aged 16 or over (there is no upper age limit), living in England and not in full-time education. You must spend at least 50% of your working hours in England and have the right to work in the UK.
Apprenticeships are open to both new hires and existing employees looking to upskill or retrain, even if you already hold a degree, provided the apprenticeship teaches substantial new skills.
02. Are there entry requirements to start an apprenticeship?
Entry requirements vary by level and employer, but because we deliver on a bespoke 1:1 basis, we assess each learner holistically during our initial assessment.
If you do not already hold GCSE grade 4/C (or equivalent) in English and maths, this will not stop you enrolling. We build supportive 1:1 Functional Skills coaching into your programme.
03. Is an apprenticeship a permanent job?
Yes. An apprenticeship is a genuine, productive job from day one. You have a contract of employment, earn a competitive salary, and receive paid holiday and workplace benefits like any other employee.
Most apprentices either stay with their employer in a permanent, promoted role or use their existing permanent contract to upskill.
04. How long is an apprenticeship?
All apprenticeships in England last a minimum of 12 months, typically between 12 and 24 months depending on the level (Level 2 to Level 5) and your prior experience.
This includes your practical training period followed by the independent end-point assessment (EPA) that confirms occupational competence.
05. Do I have to pay for an apprenticeship or take out a student loan?
No. Apprentices pay £0 towards their training and assessment costs, and never take out a student loan.
Tuition and end-point assessment costs are funded by your employer and the government, through the Apprenticeship Levy, levy transfers or 95%–100% government co-investment.
06. Which sectors does National Upskill offer apprenticeships in?
Business, AI & governance: AI & Automation Practitioner (L4), Digital Accessibility Specialist (L4), Business Administrator (L3). Cyber security & data: Cyber Security Technologist (L4), Cyber Security Technician (L3), Data Analyst (L4), Data Technician (L3).
Finance & payroll: Payroll Assistant Manager (L5), Payroll Administrator (L3), Accounts or Finance Assistant (L2), Credit Controller & Collector (L2). Learning & development: L&D Practitioner (L3).
07. How does off-the-job training work without disrupting the business?
Off-the-job training does not mean leaving the workplace for a college classroom once a week. Because we deliver 1:1, it includes shadowing senior colleagues, applying new AI or data workflows to live tasks, and flexible 1:1 online coaching scheduled around your business calendar.
